The American Psychological Association will issue more than $9 million in refunds to members as part of a court settlement concerning the collection of dues for its lobbying operations, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.
At issue is an annual $140 fee collected from licensed clinicians to fund the association's advocacy efforts. The fee is optional, but several members claimed the association implied that it was a mandatory part of annual dues, so they sued APA in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., to recover the money.
A federal court judge originally dismissed the lawsuit in 2012, but an appellate court overturned the decision last year.
About 60,000 APA members are eligible for refunds as a result of the settlement, according to the newspaper. The fee generates $6 million annually for the association. http://wapo.st/1IRDv7y
